- It’s the season for pumpkins – one of autumn’s favourite decorations and a wonderfully versatile ingredient.
- Each year, around 17 to 24 million pumpkins are bought across the UK, with spending reaching about £29 million. That’s over 100 times the price of the average UK house, at £269,735.
- Around 10 to 15 million pumpkins are grown locally, yet only 37% are eaten – even though their flesh is delicious and packed with vitamins.
- The word pumpkin comes from the Greek ‘pepon’, meaning ‘large melon’, and the world’s heaviest pumpkin weighed an incredible 1,226 kg, grown by Italian Stefano Cutrupi in 2021.
